What Hirers Really Look For During An Interview

Ever walked away from an interview thinking that you made a good impression and got the job, only to find that you didn’t get to the next stage of the hiring process? Or, have you ever wondered how that person with less experience than you got the job you were both applying for? It’s down to a few simple but critical key things that can convince hirers to choose someone with less traditional experience over others with a stronger CV.

While each employer may have specific criteria based on their unique needs, there are some universal qualities and signals that interviewers look for in potential candidates. Understanding these can provide an edge in making a memorable impression. In saying all this, it’s normal to find the job interview process nerve-wracking, especially when trying to discern what the interviewer truly values!

1. Body Language

This extends beyond non-verbal cues, which we know communicate more than words. Making eye contact, offering a firm handshake, and maintaining good posture can indicate confidence and professionalism. However, what are some of the common character traits displayed by those already in the position you are applying for? For example, if you are wanting to step into a managerial role, think about whether you are exhibiting those behaviours at the interview. The hirers must see you in that role to be convinced that you are the right candidate to appoint. Someone that doesn’t have all the right experience but exhibits the right behaviours and proves to be a good fit will be more likely to get selected over someone that has experience on paper but leaves the hirers unconvinced that they can perform the role in their organisation.

2. Cultural Fit

Compatibility: Interviewers often assess if a candidate would mesh well with the company's culture and values. This doesn't mean they're looking for uniformity, but rather someone who complements and enriches the existing work environment. In this instance, it has nothing to do with experience, but everything to do with the team fit.

3. Problem-Solving Skills

Real-life scenarios: Hirers will very likely present hypothetical or real-world problems during the interview. Be prepared with examples on how you dealt with various scenarios that best showcases your strengths, negotiation skills, customer-facing style or any other applicable requirements for your role. They're interested in your thought process, adaptability, and creativity more than the actual solution.

4. Soft Skills

  • Communication: Clear and concise communication is invaluable. Interviewers note how you articulate your thoughts, listen actively, and respond to questions.
  • Teamwork: Most roles require some form of collaboration. Interviewers look for signs that you can work harmoniously with others, manage conflicts, and contribute to team objectives.
  • Adaptability: In today's ever-changing business environment, adaptability is a prized quality. Being open to feedback and demonstrating a willingness to learn are crucial.

5. Technical Competence

While soft skills are essential, demonstrating competency in the specific skills required for the job is crucial. Whether it's coding, designing, writing, or any other specialized skill, hirers want assurance that you can effectively execute the job's tasks.

 6. Enthusiasm for the Role and Company

Genuine Interest: It's evident when a candidate has done their homework on the company and is genuinely excited about the role. This enthusiasm can often tip the scales in a close decision. We cover this in our free guide on 6 Steps To Becoming The Dream Candidate Every Hirer Wants. Everyone likes to feel wanted, including hirers! In saying that, experienced interviewers can see through the candidates’ real intentions by the way they respond to these questions. The guide goes through how to convey your genuine interest in being part of their team. Show them you want to be there the right way may be the winning card to secure the role.

 7. Potential for Growth

Companies appreciate candidates who show promise for personal and professional growth. They're not just hiring for the current role but considering the long-term contributions you might bring. They want people to who are committed to the company’s growth and successes, which is why it’s not always down to having every core requirement ticked in the job description to land the job.

 8. Authenticity

While it's tempting to present an idealized version of oneself, hirers value authenticity. They're adept at sensing when someone is being insincere or giving rehearsed answers. Authenticity establishes trust and showcases your true personality. If they sense that you are presenting a version of yourself that is not reflective of who you are, they will likely end your application process, since the interview is all about getting to know the candidate.

 9. Relevant Experience

While not the sole determining factor, relevant experience in a similar role or industry can be advantageous. It demonstrates that you've faced and overcome challenges pertinent to the position. Many candidates automatically think that they don’t have the right experience, only to find that they had it all along in the form of an earlier role or outside of their working life. You don’t have to carry certain job titles to have the relevant experience. Make sure you look at all the skills gained throughout your life and match it to the requirements.

10. Clarity in Career Goals

Interviewers appreciate when candidates have a clear vision for their career trajectory. It indicates ambition, foresight, and a proactive mindset. It also shows that they are committed to their careers, and likely, the organisation's successes.

While the list above isn't exhaustive, it provides insight into what many interviewers value in potential hires.
